“When political corruption rises to the level that it persistently undermines fundamental human rights, it should be treated as a Crime Against Humanity,” said Mr. Akaash Maharaj, COO of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) at the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) in Brasilia, Brazil in November. The IACC is the world premier forum on anti-corruption and over a thousand anti-corruption supporters were welcomed to this year’s conference. Mr. Maharaj’s was but one of the many GOPAC voices heard throughout the event.

GOPAC Brings Fight Against Corruption to Brazil
Vice-President of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption, Ricardo Garcia Cervantes appealed to members of the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate of Brazil 7 November, 2012 to join the global anti-corruption battle and form a GOPAC national chapter.
GOPAC and Transparency International Solidify Partnership to Fight Corruption Globally
Dr. Naser Al Sane, Chair of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC), and Dr. Huguette Labelle, Chair of Transparency International (TI), signed a Collaboration Framework agreement between GOPAC and TI, to enable parliamentarians and civil society to work together more effectively to fight corruption.

GOPAC Hosts International Study Group in Brussels, Belgium
GOPAC partnered with the World Bank Institute and the European Parliament’s Office for Promotion of Parliamentary Democracy to host a study group on oversight and accountability in presidential and semi-presidential systems, 3-6 September 2012, in Brussels, Belgium. GOPAC and its partners will use the findings gathered during the study group to publish a series of documents in the coming months including handbooks for parliamentarians.

Bi-partisan Parliamentarians Join Hands to Fight Corruption in Australia
The Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) congratulates Australia’s legislators on their successful inauguration of the GOPAC Australia national chapter.
For two days over 23-24 August 2012, a group of Australian state legislators from both the Labor and Liberal parties met in Melbourne to compare the operations of state anti-corruption commissions, develop strategies to combat corruption across the country, and chart a multi-partisan plan of action to uphold democratic oversight of government.

GOPAC Releases 2010-2011 Annual Report
GOPAC’s 2010-2011 Annual Report is now available on our website. The report highlights the successes of our past year, including knowledge sharing with our members, our Global Conference of Parliamentarians Against Corruption held in Mexico and the growth of our Global Secretariat. The report also includes information about our Five-year Strategic Plan which will guide the organization in the coming years.
How Strong are we in the Global Fight Against Corruption?
GOPAC, in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), is pleased to announce the release of How Strong are we in the Global Fight Against Corruption?: Self-assessing the implementation of the UNCAC. This new report assesses recent pilot workshops focussing on a jointly developed self-assessment tool for parliamentarians on the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

GOPAC and APNAC-Tanzania Host UNCAC and Anti-Money Laundering Workshop
Seventy-five Members of Parliament (MPs) from Tanzania gathered in Dodoma, Tanzania for an African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC) and GOPAC national workshop on the UNCAC and anti-money laundering. This two-day workshop was initiated by APNAC-Tanzania, the Tanzania Chapter of GOPAC, and provided an opportunity to reach out to a new group of recently elected MPs.

GOPAC Chair Advancing the Fight Against Corruption in Columbia
Dr. Naser Al Sane, GOPAC’s Chair was welcomed at the National Congress of the Republic of Colombia as the guest speaker at the Legislature Against Corruption forum hosted by the Congress’ Ethics Committee. At the close of the event, Dr. Naser Al Sane named a Grand Officer of the Order of the Congress of Colombia in recognition of his work in fighting corruption globally through inter-parliamentary relations.
Dr. Al Sane also met with Senator Alexandra Moreno Piraquive and members of the Senate of Colombia’s Second Committee on International Relations where he shared information about GOPAC and the steps that need to be taken for the creation of a National Chapter in Colombia.

A GOPAC Workshop in Lebanon
GOPAC welcomed twenty-nine ARPAC members from a number of Arab countries in March to participate in a two-day workshop on ways to implement the UNCAC in their respective countries. After the workshop, a delegation of members met with the Prime Minister of Lebanon to press for the development of a national strategy on anti-corruption including the creation of an independent body that would implement that strategy.

GOPAC Launches New National Chapter in El Salvador
GOPAC is proud to announce the formation of a new GOPAC National Chapter in El Salvador. The chapter was founded by President of the El Salvador Legislative Assembly Representative Sigfrido Reyes and Representative Margarita Velado Puentes along with another 10 elected officials. The new chapter was started with the help of Senator Ricardo García Cervantes from Mexico, Chair of GOPAC América Latina y El Caribe. It is the first of many new chapters that we are working to build in the region.
GOPAC América Latina y el Caribe in Ottawa!
President of GOPAC América Latina y el Caribe, Senator Ricardo García Cervantes and Interim Board Member of América Latina y el Caribe, Mae. Fernando Pérez Noriega, visited Ottawa January 26 and 27. They met Global Secretariat staff to discuss the roles and responsibilities shared between the Global Secretariat and GOPAC América Latina y el Caribe. They also met with representatives from partner organizations: Parliamentary Centre, ParlAmericas and the Government of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

GOPAC Launches 2012 Global Monitoring Survey
GOPAC’s Global Secretariat has launched the 2012 Global Monitoring Survey aimed at assessing the anti-corruption initiatives undertaken by our National Chapters. A report on the survey results is scheduled for release in April 2012.
